Fulfilling the dream

When Gert Griesel fulfilled his childhood dream of visiting Scotland, he realised he had discovered his spiritual homeland.

Originally from South Africa, Gert had grown up with the image of the Wallace Monument in Stirling as his computer screensaver. But when he finally visited Scotland in 2004, the true beauty of the country struck him. After a stint working at a white-water rafting company in Perthshire, he moved to Edinburgh in 2007.

The aim of staying in Edinburgh

Fast-forward to today and Gert – a full-time photographer – has two children with his Polish wife and calls Edinburgh home. But it wasn’t until the pandemic hit that Gert and his wife decided that formally putting down roots and applying for British Citizenship was the right thing to do for his family.

Citizenship had been on the cards, but the pandemic made us look at our lives differently. We love Edinburgh and don’t want to leave. Becoming a citizen was the next step for us.

My English is good but self-taught, mainly acquired by watching films, listening to music and reading English media but it hadn’t occurred to me I needed to formally verify my standard of English. I discovered I needed a B1 very close to my application deadline so after some quick research I found LanguageCert.

Going all the way with LanguageCert

As soon as I registered, LanguageCert made the process seamless and quick and easy. It had a centre close by with availability and the team on the day was great. I really enjoyed doing the test because the experience was so friendly, despite the restrictions that were still in place. LanguageCert really did make it effortless.

Gert received his results and certificate three days later. He is now a British Citizen and expects his wife to follow his footsteps soon. Though Gert only needed a B1 for his application he can see the value for anyone who wants to live and work in Britain.

My B1 has served its purpose but it’s definitely good to have in the back pocket and would be a great benefit to anyone who wants to broaden their horizons.
